Weed Control & Irrigation
We encourage you to keep the new plantings of Frysville Hybrid Poplars free from all the competing vegetation of weeds and grasses the first year. This can be done with traditional cultivators and rototillers. Hand hoeing and pulling is recommended for those weeds and grasses within 4 inches of the just planted and newly establishing unrooted cuttings. This will avoid damage to the emerging roots.
During the second and subsequent years we like to see the whole area kept mowed Avoid the use of lawn herbicides on Hybrid Poplar. If you happen to have a drought period the first summer after planting the unrooted cuttings or rooted trees you will need to irrigate with a drip line or overhead system. This is not nearly as true the second and following years after the tree's roots have established. First year unrooted cuttings that are allowed to suffer through a drought or are allowed to grow up in weeds and grasses will only achieve part of their potential.
Because of good weed control, these yearling Frysville Hybrid Poplar trees grew to over six feet the first year.

By the end of the second year these trees have reached twelve feet in height.
