Harvesting & Regeneration
A regenerated stand of Frysville Hybrid Poplar ready for second harvest for firewood. |
Regeneration is the ability of The Frysville Hybrid Poplar to continue to grow from its stump after each harvest. The second and succeeding generations of growth from the stumps of the original planting can approach twice that of the original harvest. Ideally, these trees are always harvested during the dormant season beginning in late November and ending before new growth initiates in the spring. Whether harvesting the initial generation or succeeding generations, we recommend clear-cutting the portion of the area being harvested. This will facilitate the best performance of the next generation. This wood can be stacked and dried thru the summer after harvesting giving you good dry wood to burn during the winter. Frysville Hybrid Poplars will produce more firewood and far more BTUs per acre than any other species. They are considered to be a hardwood tree. However, when scaling all hardwoods, they rate lower in BTUs per cord than some of the other slower growing species of trees, although they make up for total BTUs in growth rate. They are, however, the only species that can be grown in this manner and on this short a rotation. In terms of millions of BTUs per acre yielded per year on a short rotation program such as ours there is no other tree out there that will even come close to the performance of our Frysville Hybrid Poplars. Please see the chart below.

Harvesting Frysville Hybrid Poplars couldn't be easier; all that is needed is a chainsaw and a garden cart. No effort or expense for splitting is required.
